Summerfield Candle Co.'s candles use fragrances that are completely, totally, 100% phthalate-free. Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are a group of chemicals with a variety of different uses and applications. The most common use is in the manufacturing of plastics to make them more flexible and durable, but phthalates can be found in pharmaceuticals, building materials, cleaning products, and other household goods. As a candlemaker, Summerfield Candle Co. the phthalates that we see used in applications by other candle brands are: dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and diethyl phthalate (DEP). Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is the most common to be found used by brands in created their fragrances. Diethyl phthalates were used extensively in the fragrance industry in the past, primarily as solvents to dissolve the raw materials that go into fragrance formulations. Another common function is increasing the hot throw of a fragrance in soy wax. Companies make claims of being “phthalate-free,” only to specify in the fine print they are free of dibutyl phthalates. This is a misleading statement since other phthalates could be being used.
All are fragrance oils free from carcinogens, toxins, and other hazardous chemicals commonly found in fragrance oils. While our entire line of fragrance oils are non-toxic here are five groups we avoid no matter the cost.
Here are five groups that we at Summerfield Candle Co. do not allow in our products in any way:
Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer.
Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer.
Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects.
Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs.
Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.
IFRA - The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) is an organization that develops standards for fragrance materials. Summerfield Candle Co. always uses ingredients and produces products that are in full compliance with all IFRA standards. At Summerfield Candle Co. we stay informed on the IFRA and their set of standards. We do not use the IFRA as our goal of standards because we believe they could go farther to ensure that more products are cruelty-free and using more natural resources for brands to create their products.
