Remembering the Southern Department Stores That Defined an Era

As we start to see Summerfield Candles in retailers throughout the south, we are reflecting on retailers of the past. For many, department stores were more than just shopping spots—they were the pulse of the community.

Names like Burdines (Miami, FL), known as the "Florida Store," and Tapp's (Columbia, SC), famous for its striking clock tower, evoke memories of grand displays and holiday traditions. Neilson's (Oxford, MS) was a charming staple on the town square, while Ivey's (Charlotte, NC) was celebrated for its elegant fashion. The first Ivey store was located at 231 North Tryon Street in Charlotte. In 1937 Ivey's, Inc., opened in Asheville.

Krauss (New Orleans, LA) was a treasure trove for locals. Krauss Dept. Store was the first to install air conditioning and escalators. Foley's (Houston, TX) built its reputation on quality service, founded in 1900 by brothers Pat and James Foley, in Houston, Texas, as Foley Brothers.

Loveman's (Birmingham, AL) was beloved for its customer-first approach, and Rich's (Atlanta, GA) was the heart of Southern retail, with a Christmas tradition that lives on in memories. In 1867 Morris Rich borrowed $500 from his brother and opened a dry goods store on Whitehall Street in Atlanta.

At Summerfield Goods, we capture that nostalgia in our brand and candle scents, each one designed to take you back to cherished moments. Check out our latest candle scent named after the sweet Georgia town, Helen.
